When your child is undiagnosed or has a rare disorder it can be very isolating. Living with a disabled child is hard but it is even more difficult when there is no one out there to support you because you don’t fit into any of the support groups available.
SCWAD is a mutual support group for parents and carers of children who have rare chromosomal or metabolic disorders or who remain undiagnosed. Originally set up by two mums, SCWAD is run by a committee of parents whose children are part of the group.
As well as supporting parents and carers with coffee mornings and socials, our children meet in monthly activity sessions. Children like ours are often not fully accepted by their peer group at school and now they are able to meet new friends in a relaxed atmosphere where everyone is a bit different.
We have been successful in applying for grants so that our families can enjoy day trips in the holidays. We have also managed to raise a lot in various fundraising events. For more details see the photos, publicity and fundraising sections of our website.
